2011 YOUNG LEADERS TRAINING AND RESEARCH PROGRAM IN REGIONAL COOPERATION AND DEVELOPMENT
The Northeast Asia Economic Forum (NEAEF) has been conducting the Young Leaders Training and Research Program in Regional Cooperation and Development Fellowship since 2006 with support from the Freeman Foundation. NEAEF is pleased to announce the Young Leaders Program (YLP) for 2011. This year's training program will take place from July 26 through August 11, 2011 (dates include travel time) in Honolulu, Hawaii, USA.
2011 FELLOWSHIP AND APPLICATION
The Northeast Asia Economic Forum awards fellowships to support potential leaders working on the challenges and progress in regional economic cooperation in Northeast Asia, including Northeast Asian relations with the United States. Awards are granted on a competitive basis. NEAEF welcomes applications from young professionals, junior faculty, postdoctoral researchers, and advanced graduate students in economics, history, law, sociology, political science, environmental sciences, computer sciences, and related disciplines.
ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS
Fellowships are awarded to persons from China, Japan, Korea, Mongolia, the Russian Federation, and the United States who have demonstrated potential leadership. Applicants must be affiliated with an academic, research or business institution, non-governmental, governmental or international organization when applying for a fellowship. Other immediate post-docs/graduates will also be considered. Candidates from Northeast Asia who are studying or working in the United States may also apply, as may U.S. candidates studying or working abroad. Candidates must be proficient in English as seminars will be conducted in English. Candidates from the U.S. must have at least a basic proficiency level of a Northeast Asian language.
THE AWARD
The main goals of the Young Leaders Program are to:
1)Enhance knowledge of the social, economic, and political institutions of the individual countries of Northeast Asia and North America;
2)Encourage young leaders to consider a wide range of perspectives on regional and multilateral economic cooperation;
3)Prepare the young leaders to work collaboratively and internationally;
4)Provide them with practical education in policymaking through opportunities for direct dialogue with policymakers and other experts;
5)Promote a better understanding among young leaders of individuals, countries, and cultures; and
6)Foster a sense of community among young leaders
The YLP consists of seminars devoted to regional issues of energy and environment, transportation and logistics, trade, finance, education, regional history, and population studies, followed by the two-day participation in the 20th Annual Northeast Asia Economic Forum Conference (August 8-9, 2011). The program also consists of a series of collaborative group work, problem-solving exercises, participant presentations, and cultural and educational activities dedicated to the host country. Other activities will include visits to local government institutions, educational institutions, NGOs, research and policy institutes to promote greater understanding of the unique aspects of Hawaii within the Northeast Asian region. An international faculty of leading academics, representatives of international organizations, NGOs, government officials, parliamentarians, and heads of industry will lead seminars and working groups.
The fellowship includes accommodation in Honolulu, meals, local transportation in Honolulu, seminars, tuition, study tours, training materials, and registration for the Northeast Asia Economic Forum Conference. Partial travel grants are offered on a competitive and merit-based basis.
Cost-sharing is strongly encouraged, especially in cases where the home organization is able to cost-share.
Fellows are encouraged to present their current research during the seminars; however, applications without an accompanying research presentation will not be penalized. Papers for presentation will be selected through a competitive process.
Fellows are responsible for securing their own visas for travel to the United States (if required) and must provide evidence of medical and liability coverage.
APPLICATION INSTRUCTIONS
Applicants are required to submit:
1) A cover letter identifying specific research interests, your motivation for applying, and how the candidate will benefit from the Young Leaders Program. Please indicate in your cover letter if you are interested in presenting a research paper during the seminars and include a copy of the paper or a summary of the research in progress. Also please indicate in your cover letter your anticipated location in late July 2011.
2) Curriculum vitae/resume
3) Two letters of reference (letters in Chinese, Japanese, and Korean are also acceptable). Please identify your two referees in the cover letter.
